Technologies are constantly evolving, including those that have been relied upon for years in the dental office. Traditional x-rays have gone digital, and we have scanners that can project real-time images of the inside of your mouth onto a monitor. At Tuttle Crossing Dental Group, we utilize state of the art dental equipment to provide you with the best care possible. One such technology that can be found in our office is the CariVu.
Dental caries are more commonly referred to as cavities. They occur when oral bacteria feed on lingering food particles in your mouth. The bacteria produce acids, which eat away at the enamel of your teeth. As the enamel erodes, cavities are created, which provide hiding places for bacteria. Untreated, the cavities continue to grow, causing significant damage to your tooth.
What is CariVu?
Cavities need to be identified before they can be treated. Traditionally, we used to rely on a combination of visual inspection and x-rays to spot cavities. However, these methods are not always the most accurate and can miss small cavities as they are getting started.
CariVu is a specialized device that is designed to detect cavities. It works by using patented trans-illumination technology, which allows us to see right through the tooth. The device slips over the tooth, enveloping it, and shines a light in the near-infrared spectrum. The light is reflected back off of your enamel, while any cavities absorb light, showing up as dark spots. This allows us to spot cavities before they have the opportunity to progress and worsen.
Benefits of CariVu
CariVu offers a unique alternative to a traditional, or even digital, x-rays. Many patients remain wary about radiation exposure when it comes to this type of imaging. While digital x-ray imaging greatly reduces your exposure to radiation (up to 95%), there is still some radiation involved. CariVu relies on near-infrared wavelengths, so there is no exposure to radiation whatsoever. Other benefits of CariVu include:
Are there any limitations?
While CariVu has some benefits associated with it, it does have a few limitations:
CariVu is used as a part of your regular oral exam, so even though it has these limitations, we can still detect other issues by using other methods. Used in this manner, we can help to ensure that your oral health remains in top condition.
With CariVu, we can better detect hidden dental caries, and treat them before they cause significant trouble. For more information on CariVu and how it can aid in your oral healthcare, contact Tuttle Crossing Dental Group today.
